What is Cap?
Cap is your screen recording and async video tool. You record your screen - with your camera and voice if you want - and share the result as a link the other person opens in their browser. It replaces Loom: quick recordings that save a meeting, a long email, or a confusing bug report.
The everyday use is "show, don't schedule": a two-minute walkthrough of a design, a narrated demo for a client, a recorded bug with the exact steps to reproduce it. The viewer watches when it suits them and can leave timestamped comments.
How it works: Cap is a desktop app (macOS and Windows) plus a web side that hosts and plays your recordings. On Brundo it runs on your own instance, so recordings - which often show sensitive screens - stay on your infrastructure, not a third party's cloud.
Getting started
- Download the app for Mac or Windows from cap.so/download and install it.
- Point it at your Brundo instance. Open Settings and set the Cap Server URL to your company's Cap address (Brundo sends this in your welcome email), then sign in with your Brundo account.
- Allow screen, camera and microphone when your operating system asks - a one-time permission per device.
- Record your first Cap: choose Instant or Studio mode (see below), pick what to record, and hit record. Stop when done.
- Share it: in Instant mode a link is ready the moment you stop - copy it into Mattermost or an email.
First-time check: record a 20-second test, open the share link in another browser, and confirm the picture, your voice and the cursor all look right before you send one to a client.
Core concepts
Instant mode vs. Studio mode
Instant uploads while you record, so a shareable link is ready the second you stop - perfect for quick updates and bug reports. Studio records locally at high quality (up to 4K) and opens an editor where you add backgrounds, zooms, captions and trims before sharing - for polished demos.
Screen and camera
Cap can capture your screen, your camera, or both, and keeps them as separate tracks - so in Studio you can move or remove your camera bubble after recording. Cursor auto-zoom gently zooms in when you click, making plain recordings look produced.
Share links, comments and transcripts
Every recording gets a link that plays in the browser - no account needed to watch. Viewers leave timestamped comments and reactions. Cap can auto-generate a title, summary, chapters and a transcript, which also makes recordings searchable.
Your recordings, your storage
On Brundo, recordings live on your own instance (or your own S3-compatible storage). You own them; nothing is locked inside a vendor's library.
Everyday tasks, step by step
Send a quick update instead of a meeting
- Open Cap, choose Instant mode, and select the window or screen to show.
- Record - talk through it as if the person were next to you. Keep it under a few minutes.
- Stop; the link is ready. Paste it into the relevant Mattermost channel with one line of context.
Record a polished demo for a client
- Choose Studio mode and record your walkthrough locally.
- In the editor, add a background, let cursor zoom highlight the clicks, trim the dead air, and add captions.
- Share the link, or export an MP4 to store in Nextcloud under the client's folder.
File a bug report with context
- Instant mode - reproduce the bug on screen while narrating the steps.
- Stop and copy the link straight into the Plane issue. A 30-second recording beats a paragraph of "it doesn't work".
Bring your Loom videos across
- Use Cap's built-in Loom importer to pull existing recordings in - no manual download and re-upload.
- Move the links you'd shared over to the new Cap links over time.
Tips & good habits
- Use headphones with a mic - clear audio matters more than a perfect picture.
- Say the point in the first ten seconds; people decide fast whether to keep watching.
- Instant for speed, Studio for anything a client or prospect will see. Don't over-polish an internal update.
- Name recordings clearly (or accept the AI title, then tidy it) so your workspace stays findable.
- Before recording, close notifications and stray tabs - Cap captures whatever is on screen.
- For anything sensitive, remember the link is shareable - rely on workspace access rather than pasting links in public places.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
The app can't find our Cap server. Check Settings → Cap Server URL is set to your company's address exactly as Brundo sent it, then sign in again. If it still fails, tell Brundo - it's usually a quick fix on our side.
My screen won't record. It's almost always OS permissions. On macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, enable Cap, and restart the app. On Windows, allow the capture prompt when it appears.
Does the viewer need an account? No - anyone with the link can watch in a browser and leave comments. That's the point.
Where are my recordings stored? On your Brundo instance (or your own S3 storage). They're yours - you can export any recording as an MP4 at any time.
Can I edit after recording? Yes - Studio mode records locally and opens an editor for backgrounds, zoom, trimming and captions. Instant mode is optimised for speed rather than editing.
